The ultimate strong dark coffee, Double Roast Santos!
n.b Some ‘Bean to Cup’ machines may be designed in a way that oiler beans are not recommended for use, please check machine manuals before using.
A dark roasted Brazilian Santos coffee.
It’s called Double Roast Santos and it makes the perfect strong black coffee! It gets its name from the city of Santos, which is home to the principle port for the world’s largest coffee growing region, Brazil. The Double Roast part of the name refers to the roast style of the coffee which is definitely on the darkest end of the scale.
Taste
This coffee has a much more bitter dominant flavour. As we roast this coffee darker, any of the lingering acidity present in the Brazil Santos is replaced by a big body and that bitter taste that so many people enjoy. You should enjoy a pretty good and long lasting crema when you brew through the espresso machine which will add even more body. The addition of milk will soften the bitterness and start to reveal some of the nutty, caramel tones that are hidden a little when its drunk black.
Origin
State of Minas Gerais, Minas Gerais, Brazil
Ingredients
As with the Brazil Santos coffee, it comprises of a number of Arabica Varieties, Bourbon, Catuai, Mundo Novo and Various others.
Recommended preparation
Whilst this coffee is best enjoyed black, it also loves milk. All coffees can be brewed is all types of brewing device but this dark double roasted Brazilian coffee really shines through and espresso machine.
Recommended brew ratio
· 2:1 Coffee to Brewed Espresso
Heritage
There is a bit of a misconception of what strength is in coffee. Many people when they start drinking coffee will confuse ‘bitter’ with ‘strong’. This is a misconception and one of the lightbulb moments you have when learning about coffee.
Bitter is one of the tastes that we sense with our tongue along with sweet, salty, sour and umami. Once we can separate these tastes from the strength in our head then things start to make a bit more sense.
You can have a weak bitter coffee and strong bitter coffee. The bitterness will come from your choice of coffee and how well you brew it. The strength comes from how much of that coffee is dissolved in the water.

I was looking for a coffee bean with an aroma that would welcome guests to a breakfast meeting at my flat. A coffeeholic friend recommended Double Roast Santos, which did the trick. I was especially pleased with the delivery quick time, as the order went in on-line on a Thursday and the beans arrived on Saturday morning – my guests were due to arrive a 11:00, Saturday morning! Lots of ooohs and aaahs all around as the packet was opened, and even non-coffee drinkers and those who had given up coffee for years were delighted with the aroma and the taste.
As did my friend, I highly commend this company for service and product quality.

This is the nicest coffee I’ve had so far from pumphreys. I call it a ‘monster cup of coffee’, strong, full of flavour and packs a powerful coffee punch, perfect mid morning treat after a lovely long dog walk.

Bold, really deep flavour, very darkly nutty, some almost savoury notes., this is very very nice, how I always thought the diner coffee in Twin Peaks would be

This makes a very good Americano, when you don’t want a whole cupful of espresso

The strength and flavour makes this perfect for refilling our re-useable nespresso type coffee capsules. Delighted!

After trying a number of roasts, the darker beans are what I look for. This blend produces a good crema and a full, strong taste and aftertaste

Bought several 250g bags of different beans. My wife like the French Roast, but this, this is my favourite.
Currently working my way through a 1kg back.
Nice rounded flavour. Strong but not a smack in the mouth as an Espresso Agree with a pervious review make a very good Amricano as well. My go to bean.

The coffee has a delightful taste, but for me it needed to be much stronger.

As good as usual and sent quickly and efficiently

I am a tough coffee reviewer so gave this 4 stars even though it is my favorite UK espresso bean – because 5 stars is reserved for special roasts that I have only experienced in the US and Italy – this is close.

As good as it always is

Deep, rich and rounded. I really like this one.

One of the best dark beans you can get in UK if you like double roasted/oily beans with a rich flavour and no acidity. But you need to like bitter coffee – which I do. It still does not compete with some of the Brazilian dark roasts that I have bought in San Francisco or Boston but it’s the closest I have found here. One disappointment is that Pumphreys don’t reward regular customers with discounts or free shipping. I buy 1kg about every 3 weeks but get no loyalty reward – unlike many other suppliers.

Double Roast Santos is my favourite Pumphrey’s coffee and I’ve tried quite a few. I used to use Nespresso pods (Kazan being my favourite) but wanted to move away from them as they were expensive and not very environmentally-friendly, Double Roast Santos is the ideal replacement, in fact it is nicer. delivery was also prompt, ordered on the Sunday, delivered on the Tuesday.

I buy a kilo of Double Roast Santos every 2-3 weeks and it is normally excellent. I really like a dark sweet roast which this usually delivers. This month’s, whilst there is nothing technically wrong with the roast, it was more acidic – perhaps it was not roasted as dark as normal? To be fair it does produce a huge amount of crema! If I turn the temperature down on my espresso machine it reduces the acidity but its still not as nice as usual?

Deep, strong and smooth, with just the right touch of bitterness. My favourite.
