Coffee of the Month – October 2024 Nicaraguan Maragogype

Price range: £8.50 through £136.00

Maragogype or widely known as the Elephant bean is known for its large size and high cup quality, originally from Brazil it was subsequently introduced to Nicaragua. It is a mutant variety from the Bourbon coffee plant, which has huge leaves, large cherries and long shaped beans with a double cut centre. Grown at altitudes of at least 1000 metres, the beans thrive in shaded environments. As it’s grown in higher temperate regions with perfect soil, plenty of rain and rivers it produces a coffee that is smoother and richer in flavour than standard Arabica beans. In the 1980’s the farm was repossessed by the government then finally returned to the owners, it has about 25 blocks planted with coffee and a further 30 acres of protected virgin forest.
